Praying with a Child

My son is learning to pray......This is huge for me.

When I became a mother, my prayers took on new meaning. My relationship with God took on a new meaning and depth. As a parent, you feel empowered and at the same time so weak. I know I cannot do everything this child needs alone, there will be times when I fail or am just inadequate to the full task. So the power in prayer became more real to me as I learned that the gaps are filled by the Savior after heartfelt prayer. I hope I never forget this lesson I've learned because it has blessed all aspects of my life as a Wife, Mother, Sister, Daughter, and Friend.

Now my sweet son is learning to pray. He repeats me, line for line. So sincerely, so faithfully. As I choose the words I have him repeat I am humbled. The words, the feelings, the thanksgiving, and blessing asked for all mean more. I'm teaching a precious child to pray to his God, teaching him to have faith that prayers are answered, and that we are blessed by praying for others. All my life I used the think that the Power of Prayer only meant the blessings we received from answers to the actual prayers. I didn't realize that praying in itself to a loving Father in Heaven would bring blessings of a different kind as well. Praying with my son has brought the Spirit into my home. I'm so thankful for this blessing. I don't know why I was given the wonderful blessing and great responsibility of being a mother, but I hope I don't mess up this great gig I've got going!

President Harold B. Lee (1899–1973) taught: “The sincere prayer of the righteous heart opens to any individual the door to divine wisdom and strength in that for which he righteously seeks."

That's great Sara! I love to hear little children pray. Sometimes Wyatt is thankful for so many things that the prayer goes on forever. It really makes me think about all the little things that I should be thankful for but that I'm so used to I forget they are blessings.
