Online Shopping

I love to shop online. Actually, most people I know prefer shopping in person, I don't know too many people who like to shop online. I know I get it from my parents.

My mother is power shopper. She doesn't like to be rushed, she likes to browse and dig. NOT ME. But when we all moved to Alaska in the 80's all shopping came to a HALT. That left catalog shopping. Our family loved catalogs. I remember the Sears Wishbook that came out every fall, I would pour through that book, adult clothing, housewares, toys. Since I had a practical imagination I would spend hours picking out the things I would want in my future home, what clothes I would wear for a future job, what clothes my children would wear, even what appliances I needed. OH PLEASE DON'T KILL ME MOM!!! For a couple of years, our family would go to the post office (everyone in our town received their mail at the post office) and take other people's unwanted catalogs. It was such a fun family activity....a bonding activity, because we had to be covert. Those were fun times. That is a background of how I became fond of long distance shopping, but then came the Internet.

I think my family finally got an Internet connection in 1989, but it was still a long distance phone call at the time from our rural home. But not too many years later, my parents started shopping online instead of in catalogs. Hence the more modern form of online shopping.

Why I love Online Shopping:

1. Amazon.com!

2. Well reputed online stores have excellent return/exchange policies.

3. You can spend exactly what you want. When I'm at the mall things catch my eye (sales, cute shoes, etc) I usually have a harder time sticking to my budget. OOPS!

4. I can shop in PJs, while my buddy is sleeping. So great not to have to schlep him through the store. I've actually ordered online 1 small supply from Staples, 1 mile from my house, because they had free shipping and I just didn't want to make one extra stop there.

5. Instead of stopping at 5 different stores, hauling 30lb kiddo around plus his snacks, drinks and toys, I can spend 20 minutes finding exactly what I want at 20 different online shops.

6. Other shoppers reviews.

7. I'm not much of a impulse shopper. I don't enjoy purchasing things so spontaneously. Online I can look and look, I can wait until tomorrow. I build wish lists at my favorite sites, and if I'm still interested a few days later I can buy it. Than, I wait the shipping period (if I want it quick I'm willing to pay for the convenience of getting exactly what I want), and when it arrives and I don't like it, I'm not disappointed. I don't know why.....but I have no problem returning things.

8. My husband is so sweet and just looks up my amazon wish list. I'm constantly getting little things as a surprise from Amazon.com. He has the nice thought and it is always exactly what I want. It is like a registry for the rest of my life.

So there are just a few poorly articulated reasons why I love shopping online....not to mention the sales and getting unique items.

Here are my two top favorite places online to shop:

Here is a good post with a few tips about online shopping from Wired.

Ok. Just in case you think I'm a hard core shopper, and my poor husband works his tail off just to pay of my credit card bill. Not so. I really hardly shop at all.....but when I do I find the most satisfaction shopping online. So, what does everyone else like? In Person or Online?

p.s. If I lived in a large metropolitan area where the shopping was amazing, I may not be so online shopping crazy. But since I pass farms to get to the actual mall, Costco, and my mom's house, online shopping has the best selection!

p.p.s. This post makes me seem so shallow. But if I were deep all over I would be boring and perfect. So love all of me, even the shallow parts ;)

Oh, for anyone interested. I bought almost all of Jacob's things online, and love them all. His crib, stroller, car seat (both of them) swing, breast pump, bottles....I could go on and on.

Online shopping is the best! I hate the crowds when shopping in person. I LOVE to find the cheapest price and best rated product. We use consumer reports for any major purchase and Amazon reviews for the minor ones.

Amazon is my favorite too! I never thought about showing my wish list to Sean. What a great idea:)

When Sean worked in NY we actually ordered our groceries online too so I'm not sure you'd shop in person more if you were in a big city. It's so much easier to have it delivered and many places there delivered for free.

PS. I remember digging through people's mail at the post office with you guys!

I like both...We actually bought Cohen's car seat online at Sears for store pickup, it was ready the next day. Also, it's always fun to get things in the mail (I usually forget I bought something, so it's a surprise.)

Oh how I wish I could order my groceries online for delivery! We never needed it in Boston, but now that we buy more groceries, I would LOVE IT!

wow, that IS hilarious! I love it. I, like you know, don't shop online unless I have to. But now that I have a baby, it does seem easier to try...you may have sold me on it, but I still love to run around and get stuff done. I don't like to wait for things or feel like i have to be home for their delivery. But you are convincing and I'm glad you have a method you love. I must say I've never bought anything on Amazon. But my hubby has bought 2 cars off of E-bay! That is our big online shopping spree. Great post!

just saw your comment (nesting place) about how you are terrified to buy anything for home decor. Thank God! I am not alone! My house is empty and has an echo! LOL. Thanks for making that comment, because it helped me out!

Sara I especially love your shallow parts! Amen to everything you said. Amen, amen, amen. And being a chick without a car in a place with amazing shopping, I have worked out my shopping frustration by using Amazon.com for everything...my new BFF. And since they sell everything Mr. Wing doesn't really get upset when he sees a charge on the card for Amazon because it could be books but a charge at Ross or Marshalls (my other weaknesses) definitely get the red flag when he's combing the statement.
